Nawem sets up shop in Penang

THE National Association of Women Entrepreneurs of Malaysia (Nawem) has expanded its reach to Penang with the setting up of its Penang Affiliates of Nawem (PAN) which was launched at a hotel in George Town recently by Nawem president Shamsimar Yusof.

Shamsimar said Nawem’s membership comprised women entrepreneurs from all over Malaysia.

"However, we had a large number of enthusiastic requests to become members from women in Penang. The committee felt that it would be beneficial if the Penang women can be grouped to become Nawem affiliates in Penang so that they can meet more frequently and support each other in their businesses under the Nawem umbrella.

“We feel that this will help to meet the specific needs of the members here in Penang. With the launch of PAN, it is our hope that the many activities of Nawem could now be emulated by our Penang sisters to benefit and empower women entrepreneurs not only in Penang but the surrounding northern region,” she said.

Shamsimar said that since its inception in 1993, Nawem had inspired and empowered women entrepreneurs to be their best and had diligently conducted a variety of knowledge enhancing activities for its members which numbered 320 currently.

She said the members represented women from a broad spectrum of businesses, including manufacturing, construction and property, food and beverage, health and beauty, education, financial services, IT and broadcasting, travel and tourism, retail as well as professional consultancies such as architecture, law, trading and services.

PAN chairman Ong Swe Ee urged members of the newly launched affiliate to strive towards achieving the 3Es in raising the profiles of women across all sectors and levels.

The 3Es are; to Enable the people with skills and knowledge; to Empower the people with rights, opportunities and freedom; and to Enrich the people for an equitable share in the economic pie.

At the launching, 36 women entrepreneurs signed up with PAN on the spot to bring to total the number of its members to more than 60. For more information on PAN, call Ong (012-4770873), Catherine (012-4921367) or Noor Hayati (019-4723336).
